when I was a kid I had these Wishbone books which were basically just simplified retellings of classic literature but with the titular dog imagining himself as the main character. but the interesting wrinkle is that the adaptation is pretty straightforward and doesn’t indulge in a lot of the kid-friendly censorship you’d expect, it’s basically the same story but on a younger person’s reading level.

so in the version of Frankenstein there’s illustrations of this Jack Russell Terrier on a boat in the Arctic being like “My name is Victor Frankenstein. On my wedding night the creature broke in and strangled my dear Elizabeth to death. Arf arf”
